What is archiving?

ERP databases grow very quickly and can eventually have a negative effect on system
performance and productivity.  As a database grows it becomes critical to extract historical
data from production companies.

Archiving allows companies to extract historical data from a production company and store it in
another form.

There are two steps in this process:

  1. Historic data is transferred from the original company to a Baan archive company.
Usually, separate archive companies are created for each year to make data management
easier. The data is still visible and printable in the archive companies. Baan offers several
sessions to sort out historic data and move it to an archive company.

  1.  The data is kept in archive companies until it is no longer necessary to have it accessible
on-line. Then the data is stored in another form (tape, CD, etc.) and the archive companies
    are removed from the system.

Archiving should be performed regularly. Most companies opt for yearly archiving.
